US 6 - Caverns to BAKERSFIELD

Wed. March 7th, 2007: Gr.Canyon Cavern - Route 66 - Oatman - Barstow - Bakersfield.
Breakfast at the Cavern restaurant, 9h30 'private' tour through the GRAND CANYON CAVERNS with guide Ron (strong western slang, good humor). The name of the cavern is, because there is an underground link to Grand Canyon proved via air transfer. Nice to learn geological history of the region. Then we continued along the historical ROUTE 66 via PEACH SPRINGS, TRUXTON, VALENTINE to KINGMAN. Then we changed from the Highway back to ROUTE 66 along an old winding and extreemly scenic part of ROUTE 66 via SITGREAVES PASS and old gold mines to OATMAN - an old western town, looks like being made for tourists, very nice. 30 miles later we reached HW 40, passing Colorado river, and continued via NEEDLES, BARSTOW to Route 58 via BORON, North EDWARDS, TEHACHAPI to BAKERSFIELD. There we found a nice hotel - California Inn - and spent the evening at BUCK OWENS CRYSTAL PALACE enjoying the Western- and Country Music tradition at Bakersfield, where we even enjoyed a dance and dinner before returning to our hotel.
